I need a website update! When one launches a new website, it’s hopefully current, exciting and fun. Then time goes by, the author (me) gets complacent, and the website ages and looks old. Sometimes it takes a while for that to happen, other times it’s been forgotten and left to sit for a long time to age or just gracefully die out. Or, as it happened with my site this time, I tried hard to keep up, but the site was older when it started and it just keeps slowly getting behind.
I actually started my first site back in the 90s. I’m not sure the exact year, but I know my kids were in school and I really wanted to be part of the internet at home, and not just at work. I signed up for an Earthlink account that came with a free (well, not free, just part of the package) website. At the time, I really wanted an internet presence, but had no one to turn to for help. I bought an HTML book, and set up a really basic website. Then blogs came to my attention.
Blogs seemed wonderful to me. I was told that blogs were just people keeping their journals online, but it didn’t seem that way to me. And I wanted to be a part of it. So I created a basic blog on my site. But my kids got older, involved in club soccer, and I went back to work full time. My site was a low priority for my time.
Then came WordPress. Well, WordPress and my husband switching careers and learning to program. A new world opened up for me. I set about creating a basic WordPress site, but was still not quite sure what to do. My husband did help me, but he had to concentrate on his clients. Not on his wife who wanted a site that could blog, catalog her pictures, list out brewers, and all of the other odd items I wanted to combine in one website. But he tried to help, and to teach me to create my own pages, find my own designs. That is where my site is today. A site I bought, he helped me install, and I’ve tried to mold it into something that works for me.
So, what is wrong that I’m complaining again. I’m making my posts, updating my brewery page (when I remember), and trying to keep up with updates. But that requires more than just 30 minutes here and there and a few quick words about a project around some pictures. A good site, and blog, requires some thought. Some time. And now a newer interactive update. I’m working now on the thought (as hopefully you can see by this post), and I’ve been dedicating more time to it. Which leads me to my final thought.
I need an update! I look around at some awesome sites and see some really spiffy interactive programming. That would be great on my site. Maybe a bit of interaction, definitely a better picture heading at the top. Oh, and a much much better brewery page! My husband has some suggestions, and it’s going to take time for me to look through, and implement something new. But my goal is to do so, and have it up and working well before the end of June. That seems like a long way off (okay, not so long really), but I have smaller goals along the way and hopefully people visiting my site in the next couple of weeks will see the changes being made and a great finished project by the end.
Stay tuned. There will be a nicer site, and better content. At least that’s my goal!
